About

So you've decided to learn a little bit about me?

This is where you will really see me fumble because, as much as I love to write, I am my least favourite subject. But give me a few minutes and I'll try to bumble through so it's bearable for the both of us.

I could start with what is an ordinary fact for many writers...that I've always been a writer. But why be so predictable. Of course, I loved to write...and read. The written word was an amazing place that offered me a sanctuary from the violence of my homelife.

I heard from somewhere that you don't have to have trauma to be a writer...but it sure helps. And I guess I take that to heart as I often find myself writing on topics that explore the impact of structural and interpersonal violence against gendered bodies.

But I'm not always about those harder subjects and enjoy exploring the very existence of people...the good, the bad, the ugly, and the funny. If you haven't noticed yet, my humour often errs on the side of sardonic and I love a good amount of irony.

Academic Papers

So now that you know a little more, I guess I should stop evading the little details about myself.

I have been a freelance writer for 18 years, with very little training for the majority of the time. I started in creative non fiction before stumbling into article writing...dog breeds to be exact and I have written hundreds of them over my career before getting a shot at a diverse range of topics from health, to parenting, to medical white papers, to party planning...and so much more. Thank goodness I wasn't typecast as a writer, although, I know an absurd amount about dog breeds as I helped create content for some of the most popular pet websites out there now.

Throughout my career, I have been a columnist, journalist, ghostwriter for articles and books (both non fiction and fiction), website content writer, and editor. It has been an interesting journey where, at times, I lost my voice to the commercial side of my trade.

But it is through fiction that I always returned, establishing a stronger voice with each year. And my writing career has taught me that research is integral in the process of writing, no matter how much is made up.

It is probably that love of research and learning that has sent me on my academic career. In 2017, I achieved my post-graduate certificate in creative writing from Humber College. Following that, I earned my Masters with merit in creative and critical writing in 2020 from the University of Gloucestershire. I also hold an honours diploma in early childhood education from Mohawk College.

Currently, I am pursuing an honours specialization in gender and women's studies with a minor in creative writing for my BA. I plan to move forward with my PhD in the near future.

So that is me. I am a university student, a mother, a wife, a dog owner who knows too much about dogs, an editor to amazing authors, a little persnickety about which words are my favourite (hint...persnickety is in the running) and, most of all, I am a writer who loves what she does.

I hope you enjoy what I have shared in my portfolio, and I am always happy to discuss the literary world with anyone who'd like to (and sometimes...okay, often...those who don't).
